Role Summary:

As the Senior Counsel – IP (Intellectual Property) Europe for GE Aviation you will lead projects & initiatives with a broad scope & a high impact to the business. As a recognized specialist in European

IP law you will have a strong impact especially concerning enforcement and defense of patent and

trade secret rights.

Essential Responsibilities:

In this position you will be the Legal Business Partner and IP specialist to define, manage & complete complex assignments that further the IP goals & objectives of the GE Aviation business all across Europe, including its new Additive Manufacturing business.

In fulfilling these responsibilities, you will:

  • Provide strategic guidance on the growth of patent portfolios that strengthen the business’ competitive position in key markets;

  • Work to secure freedom-to-practice for future technology and product roadmaps of the business;

  • Provide counsel to the business on licenses, collaboration agreements and other third party transactions impacting the protection, acquisition, transfer or other disposition of IP rights;

  • Lead investigations into encroachments of Aviation’s IP rights and counsel on potential enforcement actions;

  • Counsel the business on evolving developments in global IP law, recommending policy/process changes as needed to achieve business goals and efficiencies;

  • Support the finalization of research agreements with Universities and partnership on funded research activities.


  • Juris Doctorate from accredited law school;

  • Qualified in a Member State of the European Union;

  • Strong and consistent experience in IP litigation practice in a major law firm preferably with a solid practical experience in US IP or patent law;

  • Active intellectual property litigation experience — depositions, trial, witness preparation, fact investigation, negotiating settlements;

  • Familiarity with EPO Opposition practice, cross-border litigation, IP transactions;

  • Demonstrated understanding and command of European patent and trade secret laws and of European Patent Office practices and procedures;

  • Fluency in English and Italian and/or German

  • EU Work Permit.

  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, charisma, decisiveness, poise;

  • BS or better in a technical field, engineering, mathematics or physics;

  • Facility with working collaboratively with management and business teams to solve complex IP problems;

  • Additional experience handling a wide variety of patent and trade secret matters including protection of rights;

  • Strong written communication skills, especially persuasive writing;

  • Proven ability to develop process-driven solutions to recurring issues;

  • Ability to convince and reach agreement in a multicultural environment.
